Mzuzu fathers have elected Songwe Ward Kondwani councillor Brian Nyasulu as the new mayor of Mzuzu Municipality after defeating the incumbent mayor, Gift Desire Nyirenda.

During the voting process at the Mzuzu Municipal Council Chambers, Nyasulu received nine out of 16 votes while Nyirenda received seven votes.
In the deputy mayor position, Katawa ward councillor Monica Simwaka defeated Mzilawainwe ward councillor Tony Mwenitete by 10 votes and Chiptura ward councillor Hiwett Mkandawire who received only 3 votes, becoming the first female deputy mayor.
In his inaugural speech, Nyasulu promised to use his position to revitalize the city and said he would be the people’s mayor.
“I thank the councillors for the confidence they have placed in me and I will ensure the smooth implementation of the Mzuzu Development City Plan.
He said one of his plans is to attract investors to the city to boost its growth and development.
Mzuzu City Council chief executive Gomezgani Nyasulu said the council would provide all necessary support to the new mayor in carrying out his duties.
“As the Secretariat we are delighted that the election went ahead and we will be supporting our new mayor to ensure our plans as a council are realised.
Besides that, having the first female deputy mayor is a positive development for the council as it means we have achieved 50:50 gender representation in senior positions,” Nyasulu said.
In her speech, Sinwaka said she was delighted to be the first female deputy mayor and pledged to work hard to support the mayor and jointly promote the city’s development agenda.
