Malawians living around the Mtwalo-Kafukule-Eswazini-Mzimba road have petitioned President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, demanding government explain why the road construction is further delayed.

The community lamented that neither the previous nor the current government had shown any resolve to build the road in the past 60 years.

The petitioners marched from the main road to Mbelwa District Council where they handed over the petition asking President Chakwera to intervene in the matter, saying they have suffered a lot.

Mzimba Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) journalist Vanani Nyirenda quoted the task force chairperson Tchulani Mhango as saying that successive governments had failed to build the road; hence, they decided to petition Chakwera.

Apparently, people in the area expected Chakwera and his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government to prioritize the project, but they are desperate and unsure if Chakwera will be able to retain his seat considering the current regime’s term ends in September.

“We were forced to act because we had challenges, especially during the rainy season, when pregnant women might give birth on the way to Mzuzu or Mzimba hospitals,” Mhango said.

Reacting to the development, DPP vice-chairman for northern affairs Jappie Mhango said it was a clear sign that Chakwera was only paying lip service to developing the northern region.

Mhango argued that since assuming office as president in June 2020 through the new presidential election, Chakwera has not shown seriousness and commitment to developing the region.

“His government has instead reduced allocations for development projects in the northern region. That is why we say that the people must vote the PDP back into power next year to enjoy meaningful and tangible development in this country,” he said.

Mhango listed some of the projects implemented by the DPP government in six years, including the Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay road, the Karonga-Songwe road, the Karonga water supply project, the Chitipakalenge water supply project, the Ntalil Rural Development Centre, the Lumbi Teachers College, the Livingstonenia-Njakwa-Pwezispare, the Henga Gravity Water Project, the Mzimba Water Supply Project and several village bridges in Mzimba, the Nkhata Bay Water Project and the Nkhata Bay Modern Bus Terminal and Market.
