The Myanmar military has 14 regional commands across the country, from the Himalayan foothills in the north to the vast southern delta region bordering the Indian Ocean.
Soldiers at at least 10 of these locations are currently fighting either existing ethnic armed groups or the newly formed “People’s Defense Forces.” The struggle with the military since the 2021 coup.
The capture of the Lashio outpost would be the first time the Myanmar military has lost regional command in the conflict that erupted more than three years ago.
