Vice President Kamala Harris explains why she changed some of her positions on immigration, but not herself.
She told CNN her values had not changed but her time as vice president had given her a new perspective on some of the nation’s most pressing issues.
Harris also said that if elected, she would appoint a Republican to serve in her Cabinet.
She has dismissed rivals’ doubts about her racial identity and rejected suggestions from Donald Trump.
On illegal border crossings. Harris tried to explain why her position had changed.
Overall, Harris’ joint interview in Savannah with her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz, was their first joint interview since becoming Democratic presidential nominees and provided the clearest glimpse yet into Harris’ positions and plans for the presidency.
“How should voters feel about some of the changes you’ve made?” the reporter asked Harris. “Is it because you’re more experienced and better informed now? Is it because you’re running for president in the Democratic primary? Should they feel comfortable and confident that what you’re saying now will be your future policies?”
Harris said that despite the change in position, her values have not changed.
“I think the most important and significant aspect of my political views and decisions is that my values have not changed,” she said. “You mentioned the Green New Deal. I have always believed and worked for it, that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent problem, and that we must address it by applying metrics including meeting deadlines,” Harris and others said.
