On the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the United Nations declared July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
Less than two months ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the Srebrenica genocide, of which Australia was one of the co-sponsors.
– Australia co-sponsored the resolution, which aims to establish a respectful commemoration as an important step towards reconciliation. Today is a day to remember the victims, comfort their families, learn the lessons of the war and work for peace, said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a message conveyed to us by Honorary President Amir Sahinovic, Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina in New South Wales.
Mr Albanese added that Australia was a country that supported the values of tolerance and respect.
– The horror of Srebrenica reminds us that we must never take these values for granted. We have a responsibility to protect them and to share them with each other and the world. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “As we do every year at this time, we now remember the thousands of people who died in Srebrenica and express our condolences to the families of the deceased.”
