Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Minister nominee Alfred Mutua has denied knowing First Choice Employment Agency chief executive Judith Chepchirchir.

He was responding to a member’s question about his relationship with the CEO, whom he reportedly introduced to the President at an event at KICC.

Chepchirchir was the focal point of the controversial overseas employment agency incident in Uasin Gishu in August 2023.

Under scrutiny, Mutua explained that she first met her at a KICC event attended by President William Ruto and “since then, I have not seen her again”.

“We had an event at KICC and we had different stands and the Foreign Office stand was right next to the Labour Party stand and I’ve never come across that before,” he said.

“Ministers were presenting their plans and when the president arrived, we were told to combine labour and immigration issues… I was there with my PS and others and I introduced the president to those present and if you watch the video, you will see I didn’t even know her name and she introduced herself,” Mutua said.

The former CS is the second candidate to be vetted by the Moses Wetangula-led Appointments Committee.

Mutua is one of 10 former cabinet members set to return to the cabinet if approved.

Chepchirchir is the face of the Wasingi-Gishoo County Education Scholarship, a program where some parents allegedly lost money.

In a past speech, she clarified that they are not involved in ensuring educational opportunities and do not send workers to Finland.

“We only offer jobs to countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom,” Chepchirchir stressed.

Chepchirchir also claimed that some politicians were trying to sabotage her business.

She also said she had refunded 448 potential workers who had not been offered employment, as previously promised.

Chepchirchir also clarified that she has nothing to hide.
