Former President Peter Mutharika has expressed sadness over the current state of Malawi, saying the country has “fallen into trouble”.
In a post on Facebook, Mutharika lamented the hardships faced by Malawians, including spending nights in queues at immigration offices and worsening poverty as reported by the World Bank.
“The country is in deep trouble. From people standing in long queues at immigration offices to the World Bank reporting rising poverty, the plight of the Malawian people has never been worse since we achieved multi-party democracy,” Mutharika wrote.
He also criticized the country’s economy, pointing to the silent devaluation of the currency, runaway inflation, and a lack of foreign exchange to support local businesses and industries.
Mutharika, who is also leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, urged Malawians not to lose hope, assuring them that “help will come next year” and things will get better.
However, Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu responded by saying that Mutharika had never spoken positively about the current government.
Kunkuyu asked Mutharika to recognise the government’s development projects, including the construction and renovation of roads across the districts.
Mutharika made the comments as Malawi’s Electoral Commission prepares to launch voter registration, and he encouraged Malawians to participate in order to “drive out these ignorant leaders.”
Recently, Malawians have been calling on Mutharika to run in next year’s election, calling him the only hope and “political savior.”
Amid strong calls, Mutharika accepted the invitation to run for election, paving the way for his return to power.
