Former President and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, Professor Peter Mutharika, has expressed concern on social media over the performance of the Donse Alliance government, saying it has failed to meet the needs of the majority of the people in the country.

In a lengthy post on Facebook on Friday, the 84-year-old Mutharika highlighted the challenges citizens face in accessing public services, particularly at immigration offices where people have to queue overnight to get passports.
“It always makes me sad to read the newspapers over the past week. The country has fallen on hard times. From people queuing up overnight at immigration offices to the World Bank reporting on rising poverty,” he explained.
Mutharika said that since Malawi achieved multi-party democracy, the plight of the people has never been as bad as it is now, with poverty becoming increasingly serious, the economy in a downturn, the currency silently depreciating, inflation severe, and a lack of foreign exchange to support local businesses and industries.
“On the other hand, the economy continued to decline, the currency silently depreciated, inflation was out of control, and foreign exchange could not support local businesses and industries. Those of us who knew that the CPM leadership would destroy the country certainly did not expect this,” said Mutharika.
The former president urged all Malawians not to lose hope, saying help would be forthcoming next year and things would get better.
“The Malawi Electoral Commission will begin the voter registration process and invite voters to register in large numbers so that we can oust these ignorant leaders. We cannot tolerate this miserable failure for another five years,” Mutharika said.
However, Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu said Mutharika has consistently failed to recognise the development efforts of the current government, including the construction and renovation of inter-district roads.
The Minister asked Mutharika to acknowledge the initiatives and provide constructive feedback.
