The President of the Democratic Progressive Party, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has congratulated the newly elected leadership team at the party’s recent electoral conference.
Mutharika was elected as the DPP chairman unopposed and will lead the party into next year’s election.
“I want to congratulate everyone who was elected to various positions at the DPP convention. Your success today is a testament to the trust the delegates placed in you. Do not let them and the party down,” he posted on Facebook.
Mutharika urged the new leadership to take their position seriously and fulfil their responsibilities.
“As I said in my speech yesterday: take your position seriously and discharge your responsibilities. The trust placed in you by the people gives you enormous power,” he said.
The DPP chairman also encouraged the losers to continue to devote themselves to the DPP cause.
“For those of you who were not selected this time, do not be discouraged and do not reduce your commitment to the DPP cause. All of our dedicated members cannot become the governing party. We need your wisdom, energy and dedication,” he said.
Expressing optimism about the party’s future, Mutharika said: “Under the leadership of these men, the path back to government is now a reality. May God bless us all.”
The PDP electoral conference was held at Comesa Hall in Blantyre from Sunday to Monday, where new leaders for various positions were elected.
The new appointments mark a major shift in the DPP’s leadership and indicate that the party is preparing for future elections and political activities.
