The Military Order of Willem is the oldest and highest award of the Netherlands. It was established by King Willem I on 30 April 1815. It is a reward “for distinguished acts of bravery, courage and fidelity by those who have served ourselves and our country, whether at sea or on land, in any capacity, without regard to rank or grade”.
3 carriers are still alive
More than 6,000 soldiers and resistance fighters have received this order. This has rarely happened in recent years. Currently, there are only three recipients of the Order of the Military Order of Wilhelm. Current State Secretary Gijs Tuinmann is one of them. Marco Kroon and Roy de Ruiter can also wear the award. All four are knights of the fourth degree.
The last Knight to serve in World War II died three years ago. That was the English major Kenneth Mayhew. He lived to be 104 years old.
