Contenders for the municipal and communal elections on December 11 have begun the countdown. Candidates must pay a mandatory deposit of between 1.2 million and 20 million arials to cover the printing costs of sensitive documents such as the single bulletin.
The deposit is the highest for municipalities of the first category, Antananarivo, set at 20 million Ariaries, the same amount as for the legislative elections and double that of 2019. The deposit is set at 15 million Ariaries. For municipalities of the second category, the deposit ranges between 2.4 million and 5 million Ariaries. The amount for rural communities fluctuates between 1.2 and 1.7 million Ariaries. The amount varies according to the category of municipality, the number of voters and the number of elected councillors.
If the opening date initially suggested by CENI was August 12, then the submission period for applications will be September 5 to 15. The campaign will start on November 19 and end at midnight on December 9. It lasts for 15 days and ends 24 hours before voting day.
The original Finance Law (LFI 2024) set the budget for community and municipal elections at $50 billion.
