KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has ordered the construction of export zones in six provinces of the country, an official said on Thursday.
India’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Maulana Abdul Ghani Bairadar made the remarks while addressing a rally on National Export Day organised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
He assured all Afghan export companies that Afghanistan’s exports will increase and all products will be exported abroad in accordance with Afghanistan’s export standards.
He said that export zones would be constructed in six provinces of the country as per the order of the IEA leadership and the land transfer and ownership procedures for these export zones had been completed.
Without giving details, he said that currently 13 provinces of Afghanistan were exporting goods and efforts were being made to find potential and alternative markets for Afghanistan’s exports in the region and around the world.
He asked all exporters to keep in mind the honour and stature of the country and ensure that their exports meet international standards.
He also asked domestic traders to export commodities instead of raw materials.
The Acting Commerce and Industry Minister said the Cabinet decided to observe May 9 as National Export Day to promote exports and provide all-round support to exporters.
Deputy Commerce Minister Maulavi Ahmadullah Zahid said the country could achieve self-sufficiency only if trade was balanced.
He said Afghanistan’s trade is unbalanced, with 79 percent being imports and 21 percent being exports.
Mohammad Younis Mohammad, first assistant chairman of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment, called on the international community to cooperate with Afghanistan on cash transfers.
He said dual policies of some neighbouring countries had led to a drop in exports and asked these countries to formulate policies based on the neighbourhood principle.
At the end of the meeting, an Afghan private company signed a $25 million agreement with a Chinese company to export 10,000 tons of cotton to China.
During the meeting, 58 businessmen were appreciated for their huge export volume.
