The Greek Navy ship HS Psara avoided a drone attack by Houthi rebels last night. The incident took place while escorting and protecting a cargo ship through the Gulf of Aden as part of the EU Operation ASPID. During the attack, the Greek crew shot down two drones. Zr. Ms. Karel Dorman warned Greek colleagues of the impending threat. The ship was also ready to provide medical support if necessary. No casualties were reported in the attack. No material damage was caused either.

The drone attack took place off the coast of Somalia. In defence, the crew of HS Psara used a variety of weapon systems and artillery. The threat then subsided and the freighter was able to continue its voyage safely.

Also on board the Greek Navy vessel during the attack were three Dutch staff, including Lieutenant Colonel George Pastor, who happened to be on a working visit. “This attack shows that shipping in the region remains very unsafe. By deploying forces from EU countries we are able to protect shipping and maintain free passage.” Pastor, along with his international staff, provides tactical command of the EU operation ASPIDE from HNLMS Karel Dorman.

Drone threat

The Houthis in Yemen are posing a threat using various types of drones, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Houthis use these weapons to conduct reconnaissance and attacks on military bases, critical infrastructure, and shipping in the region. UAVs are difficult to detect and intercept. This allows the Houthis to cause significant damage with limited resources.

The Royal Navy is aware of the threat posed by drones. The Navy has been conducting exercises and preparing new systems for some time. These are designed to counter drone attacks from the air and surface.

Freedom of movement

EU Operation ASPIDES aims to promote and protect free passage of shipping in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Gulf region. The Netherlands, like other European countries, has a direct interest in the safe and unimpeded transport of goods by sea. Currently, this free passage is seriously threatened by attacks by the Houthis. They use drones and (ballistic) missiles to attack Yemeni cargo ships.
