On the morning of August 5, 2024, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Funantech Canal, Mr. Sun Chanthol, Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, said that the groundbreaking ceremony was a turning point in Cambodia’s development. The history of the shipping industry was engraved with the overwhelming support of the country.

In front of Prince Hun Manet and Lo Tsumthaiv and more than 10,000 people in total, Mr. Sun Chanthol expressed his strong will to implement the initiative of Senate Chairman Prince Hun Sen in the “formula” of “win-win politics” to transform the war into peace, stability, independence, unity and territorial integrity under wise leadership, which is the Prime Minister’s clever and wise intuition in his seventh term.

In fact, this morning’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Funan Tekho Canal is a testament to the achievement of the new project, a great achievement of the Khmer nation, showing the full potential and strong will of the Royal Government and all people. Cambodians around the world connect the history of the potential use of the waterway by the Great Funan Empire to the glorious Tekho Peace Era after it was abandoned in the fifth and sixth centuries AD due to the country’s continuous wars. Participate in the realization of the vision of the Royal Government of Cambodia during the seventh term of the Royal Government of Cambodia, under the leadership of the Prime Minister with long-term vision, clarity and strong will.

The management and technical officials of the implementing agencies made a firm commitment on their own behalf to participate in the successful construction of the Funantech Canal and its debut in 2028, leaving a historic achievement for generations of Cambodian people.

The Prek Chun Funan Techo Canal is Cambodia’s first historic waterway project, with a total length of about 180 kilometers and a planned cost of about US$1.7 billion. It will connect Cambodia’s rivers through the four provinces of Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep directly to the sea. The construction time is about 4 years.
