More than 60 municipalities are currently at greatest risk of fire due to the hot weather, according to Portugal’s Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which has placed eight regions under yellow alert.
The greatest risk of fire is in more than 60 municipalities in the regions of Santarém, Faro, Ciudad Real, Leiria, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu and Bragança.
The maximum temperature today is expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius in Castelo Branco, followed by Beja and Évora at 37 degrees Celsius, Portalegre at 36 degrees Celsius and Bragança at 34 degrees Celsius.
IPMA also placed several municipalities in all regions of mainland Portugal at very high risk of fire.
According to IPMA calculations, the fire danger will remain high in some areas until at least Saturday.
This risk, determined by IPMA, has five levels, from low to highest, and is calculated based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
Due to the hot weather, IPMA has issued a yellow alert until 6pm on Wednesday for the regions of Bragança, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Setúbal, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre.

IPMA predicts clear or sunny skies over the African continent today, with cloudy skies in the morning on the west coast, moderate to strong northerly winds along the coast and highlands, and morning fog or dense fog in parts of the west coast.
Minimum temperatures range from 15 degrees (Braga) to 23 degrees (Portalegre), and maximum temperatures range from 24 degrees (Aveiro) to 39 degrees (Castelo Branco).
