Philippine authorities announced yesterday that they had raided a suspected illegal gambling and cyber scam complex in a central province and detained more than 160 people, most of them Chinese and Indonesians, for committing crimes on the Internet.
More than 100 government agents backed by military secret services carried out the operation on Saturday at a resort in Lapu-Lapu City as part of an ongoing crackdown ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that targets online games mainly from customers in China, where the games are banned.
Marcos said the massive illegal gambling operation disregarded Philippine laws and violated regulations on a massive scale, in addition to other crimes including financial fraud, human trafficking, torture, kidnapping and death.
The raid on the Tourism Garden Resort, which has 10 buildings complete with a swimming pool, bar and karaoke restaurant, came after the Indonesian Embassy in Manila called for the rescue of eight Indonesians who were forced to work in the online gaming industry, according to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission.
The commission said at least 162 foreigners were “found working on three separate farms within the complex”, but did not provide details.
Philippine authorities said the crimes included love scams, gambling and investment schemes that defrauded victims of large amounts of money.
The same source said that based on the information released, 83 Chinese, 70 Indonesians, six Myanmar citizens, two Taiwanese citizens and one Malaysian citizen will be sent to Manila for proceedings by the Bureau of Immigration and possible deportation. The owner of the hotel building was arrested and may face criminal charges.
