(CNS): The Cayman Islands received another ¼ inch of rain between 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday morning, the disaster management department said, without distinguishing between the three islands. At least another inch of rain is expected for the rest of the day, although the clouds are moving quickly north-westward toward Cuba. The weather system that swept through the islands last weekend and Monday is still leaving the ground soaked, increasing the risk of flooding.
“I know the people of the Cayman Islands may be concerned about current weather conditions, given the flooding events that occurred on Monday,” said Cayman Islands Premier Julianna O’Connor-Connolly. “As we move into a culture of preparedness, government resources are well-reserved and ready to assist those who may need assistance. I encourage our community to come together to support the vulnerable among us, remain vigilant and follow the guidance given by our disaster management experts.”
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service forecasts a 30% chance of rain today and tomorrow. Strong southeasterly winds are expected over the Cayman Islands area over the next 48 hours, with rough seas. Radar images indicate isolated showers in and around the Cayman Islands.
Premier Jane Owen said people were still dealing with the impact of the flooding and she encouraged people to call the HMCI call centre at 949-6555 if they were experiencing any distress.
“Our first responders will be on standby during severe weather and we urge citizens to exercise caution on the roads to prevent unnecessary accidents,” she said. “We urge the public to continue to monitor trusted government channels, namely caymanprepared.gov.ky and all CIG social media channels for the latest weather and related news.”

The Ministry of Education also asks parents and guardians, especially those with young children living in flood-prone areas, to support the school bus process by being present to greet their children when they drop off the bus after school whenever possible.
Drivers are advised to use extra caution when the road surface is wet. Slow down and increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to increase your braking distance. Drivers should avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding and not attempt to drive through flooded roads, as the depth of water can be misleading and dangerous to you and your vehicle.

Meanwhile, Cayman Airways Limited (CAL) said it is monitoring weather conditions across the Cayman region and Florida and that severe weather on Thursday could impact flight operations. Currently, flights are operating as planned with only minor disruptions due to weather conditions, but this could change.
