Sunday’s race marked a turning point for Red Bull, which has dominated the season so far. Verstappen finished sixth, while his teammate Sergio Perez could only finish eighth.
The problems began at the pit stop, where a team error caused a six-second delay. Verstappen’s reaction was immediate and violent: he pounded the steering wheel with his fist, a rare move from a world champion.
The Dutch pilot’s frustration did not stop there. He radioed a pointed message to his team: “Can people please stay awake? I know this is a… position, but it’s important.”
Verstappen explained after the race that the problems were multifaceted. In addition to the missed pit stops, the team’s strategy was also lower than expected, opting for two pit stops instead of one. In addition, technical problems prevented him from using the maximum power of the engine for most of the race.
“Overall it was a bad race,” Verstappen said. “If we don’t change anything in the car we will have problems between now and the end of the season. We still have a lot of work to do.”
Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc’s stunning victory, and McLaren’s two podium finishes seemed to have significantly reduced the Austrian team’s advantage.
