SEOUL: South Korea on Thursday (July 18) ordered residents living near rivers in the central region to evacuate their homes due to heavy monsoon rainfall exceeding 300 mm, while alerts were issued for large swathes of the country including the capital.
Emergency services said the rain caused the cancellation of more than 24 flights at Incheon International Airport on the west coast and disrupted train services in Seoul.
The South Korean government is closely watching sudden swells in rivers flowing out of North Korea and has urged caution against mines laid by neighboring countries along the border that could be washed downstream.
South Korea’s military said it could not rule out the possibility that North Korea had laid more mines in recent weeks because it was well aware of the possibility of heavy rain.
“We are monitoring the water levels of major rivers in both the North and the South in real time,” South Korean military spokesman Lee Chang-hyun told a news conference.
