More than 100 Bosnian diaspora entrepreneurs from Germany gathered in Berlin this week to network, strategize, and explore new investment opportunities in their home country. The event was held with support from the U.S. government as part of the ongoing work of the USAID Diaspora Investment Program to strengthen business cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and its diaspora.
Respected members of the Bosnian diaspora in Germany and partners of the USAID Diaspora Investment Project used the event to engage in lively discussions on the impressive results of corporate investments in Bosnia and Herzegovina and opportunities to connect and invest in local companies. Project activities were also presented, including partnerships with 30 municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to further promote diaspora engagement. The event was also attended by Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Germany Damir Arnot, who welcomed the initiative to deepen ties between the diaspora and the homeland.
– The conference outside Bosnia and Herzegovina was an opportunity for new investments by the diaspora, while also demonstrating the progress of diaspora integration at the local level. Armin Alijagić from the event’s organizing partner, the Naša perspektiva Association, said that the potential and strength of our immigrants finally had concrete results, which encouraged other immigrants to consider investing in their home country.
– It’s time to write a new chapter in the story of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will portray our country as a business destination”, Alijagic added.

Innovation and entrepreneurship. USAID’s Diaspora Investment Program is currently trying to leverage the success, knowledge, and skills gained abroad to promote faster and better economic development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To date, the program has supported 66 new companies founded in the country by Bosnian investors. These companies have invested more than 40 million km in Bosnia and Herzegovina and created more than 850 jobs across the country.
In the panel discussion, Amar Begović, Elvir Bećirović, Amela Malja and Amra Kötschau-Krilić discussed various aspects of maintaining business and social ties between the German and Bosnian diasporas.
– Systematic integration is strategically important for creating the prerequisites for the sustainable return of expatriates. Amar Begović, one of the founders of Circuit Business Consulting, said that the expatriates play an important role in creating a different environment, in which people recognize our country as an attractive place to work, live and invest. The German market focuses on the automotive industry.
– Our goal is to build links between Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina by working closely with well-known domestic companies in the field of furniture production and interior design that have a good international reputation. This cooperation enriches the cultures of both countries and serves as a source of new ideas and innovative solutions. “We like to work with those who respect and meet the requirements of the German market, which include high quality standards, sustainability, innovative design, functionality and regulatory compliance”, explains Amela Malja from Unique Factory in Berlin.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina Future Foundation (BHFF), a partner of the Berlin Conference, also presented the positive results of social participation of the Bosnian diaspora at the event.
– My fellow volunteers and I are delighted to participate in this event on behalf of the BH Future Foundation, so I would like to thank USAID for organizing it. As representatives of the BH Future Foundation, it is very important for us to continue to build connections with our diaspora, as we believe that we have a common vision of creating better conditions for everyone in the BH society. We look forward to future events and initiatives, said Dalila Arapović, one of the participants of the meeting.
