MNRE signs MoU to process and recycle e-waste

Apia, Samoa – August 6, 2024 – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with New Zealand-based Blue Orca to initiate collaboration in the collection and export of e-waste in Samoa.

The memorandum of understanding stipulates the implementation of Environmental Recycling Program Samoa Project. The agreement helps promote environmental sustainability by providing a mechanism for the safe disposal and recycling of e-waste.

E-waste consists of discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones and televisions, which often contain hazardous materials and can harm the environment if not disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. This scheme aims to mitigate these risks by providing individuals and organisations with a responsible way to recycle electronic devices.

“E-waste has become one of the largest bulky waste sources generated in Samoa, with very limited recycling and management options available in the country,” said Frances Brown Reupena, CEO of Lealaisalanoa.

“The MoU we are signing today will kick off a promising five-year journey. The ministry aims to synergize with other waste management initiatives to create a greater impact,” she said.

MNRE through its Waste Management and Pollution Control Division (WMPCD) leads and promotes partnerships and collaborations with private sector entities and local communities to expand their ecological awareness and environmental outcomes under the MoU.

Samsung is a sponsor of the project and is proud to be an advocate for e-waste manufacturer responsibility in the Pacific region.

The agreement will cover all e-waste types and brands, including Samsung e-waste, and will be responsible for the transportation and export of all e-waste with the support of Blue Orca and related partners.

Through the program, the public can bring old or unwanted electronics to designated collection points where they are pre-packaged and exported to overseas recycling markets.

This helps prevent the release of hazardous substances into the environment and promotes the reuse of valuable materials in electronic devices.

The project as a whole supports the goals of sustainable development, pollution prevention and resource conservation, creating a cleaner, healthier environment for present and future generations.

The Ministry expressed its gratitude for the help of Blue Orca NZ Ltd, Samsung Electronics New Zealand and its local counterparts SSAB and the Samoa Association of Tokelau Recyclers (STAR), which have all expressed their willingness to support Samoa in managing e-waste over the next five (5) years.
