He pointed out that the excellent results for the quality of bathing waters in Cyprus are very important not only for the health of bathers and the environment, but also for the economy of Cyprus, which is closely linked to the quality of our seas and tourist activities. In a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, reference was made to the European Commission’s 2023 bathing water quality results.

The Ministry pointed out that Cyprus was ranked first in the European country with the cleanest bathing water in 2023 for the second consecutive year, and stated that according to the results of the European Commission report, Cyprus met the stricter norms of the Bathing Water Quality Management Directive in 2023 and fulfilled all the obligations arising from it.

It was added that the 2023 swimming season runs from May 1 to October 31, with 123 swimming waters throughout the Free Cyprus coastal area being monitored at least monthly, while sampling is also carried out prior to the start of the swimming period.

“The direct relationship between the quality of swimming waters, health and the environment is self-evident. The quality of bathing waters also has a direct relationship with tourism, so excellent results are not only very important for the health of bathers and the environment, but also for the economy of Cyprus, which is closely linked to the quality of our sea and tourist activities,” the announcement said.

The announcement said that this success and the first time for Cyprus to be recognized for the second consecutive year “is due to the perfect cooperation of the Ministry of Environment, which has overall responsibility for the implementation of the Directive, together with the Departments of Health Services and Public Health Services and State General Chemistry, as well as local government authorities.

As mentioned earlier, the European Commission published on Tuesday the final results of the European Bathing Water Quality, according to which Cyprus has a compliance rate of 97.6% for the 2023 swimming season, with 120 of the 123 bathing water points having excellent water quality, adding that due to the limited number of samples, “only” three points have not yet been classified.

“This performance places Cyprus first among the countries with the cleanest swimming waters in Europe,” the report said, noting that second place went to Austria (96.9%), followed by Croatia (96.7%) and Greece (95.8%).

The bulletin states that swimming “is a very popular and important leisure activity in Europe” and that the annual assessment of European swimming areas shows how environmental protection measures are being implemented, enabling citizens to make informed decisions about where to enjoy swimming in European regions.
