Ministry of Health: Drinking water supply has reached 90%

The Ministry of Agriculture says 91.7% of Namibian households have access to drinking water.

Executive director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata said at the ministry’s annual performance review workshop on Monday that a number of activities during the current financial year contributed to the figure. These included the construction of 12 new earth dams – five in Ohangwena region, four in Oshana, two in Kavango West and one in Hardap.

The ministry also built three new pipelines, rehabilitated three short pipelines, rehabilitated 47 existing water points, cleaned 34 existing boreholes, connected 815 private water points, drilled 146 new boreholes and equipped 82 newly drilled boreholes. “In addition, the ministry built 94 health facilities – 88 in Oshikoto, four in Oshana and two in Kavango East,” Ngitua Mata said.

On water supply, she explained that the ongoing progress in water pipeline construction included the Onamatanga pipeline construction (55% completed) and the Okanguati-Ohamalumba pipeline construction (94% completed).
