Blantyre, August 4: The Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Managing Director of Amazon Group Limited, Moses Kunkuyu, has launched a K10 million football cup competition called the Tambara Super Cup which will be held from August to December 2024.
Nearly 40 Blantyre District teams not registered in the Southern Region Premier League and First League will compete in the cup when the Kumanda All Stars host the Chikuli Eagles, who ultimately emerged victorious on penalties.
Speaking at a launch event held at Chilika Kwaku Manda village in Kuntaja, Blantyre Traditional Authority on Saturday, Kunkuyu said active participation in sports helps people stay in work and the sponsorship will be the seed for the development of football in the country.

“The cup competition will help to develop new talents and improve the football industry, the authorities should adjust the way football is managed and even the way football managers manage the game, we can learn from this, people should not waste time criticising leaders, wasting time on Tik-Tok or Facebook, instead, the cup competition will keep them busy,” he pointed out.
Kunkuyu said football can be a powerful tool for economic development as it creates jobs, attracts investment and generates income for local players.
The Secretary General of the Malawi Southern Region Football Association, Dalis Kachara, expressed his gratitude for the development of the competition and said that this was the first time that Malawi had held an expensive cup competition at the community level, which would promote the development of the football industry.
“We are very excited as far as football administrators are concerned, especially governing football in the southern region on behalf of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM). We will generously guard against this situation because we do not want any problems to arise in this cup and we hope that this will attract a lot of sponsors to football,” he said.

Kachara added that the development projects initiated by the minister should not end but continue as it will contribute to the industry, adding that the cup will give young people something to do and help them lead healthy lives.
Simon and Kendall’s Black Missionary Banda and other traditional dances added spice to the event.
