Minister fails to refute claim that 2022/23 deficit was understated by P3.9 billion
In a statement to parliament last Monday, Finance Minister Peggy Selame made clear her desire to “address misinformation and/or misleading statements circulating in the public domain.” However, two oddities soon emerged.
First, she never identified the statements or anyone who spread the misinformation. Second, she failed to mention a controversial and explosive detail in a report that the Treasury would have surely known about. While no names were mentioned, a quarterly journal called the Economic Review refuted a detail that Selamei repeated to Parliament as misleading.
