Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Paul Bosawai, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Kitano Construction signed a contract for the renovation of Kilu’ufi Hospital in Malaita Province in Tokyo on Thursday.

The project, which will begin in September, will include the construction of a new central clinical building, a delivery building and the updating of medical equipment.

The total cost is approximately 120 million Singapore dollars.

Speaking to SIBC News after signing the agreement, Minister Bosavai said decentralising the National Health Service was very important for Solomon Islands.

He said the Kiluufi Hospital Improvement Project would enable the rural population in Malaita Province to have access to quality health services.

“It is well known that we need to improve and upgrade our health facilities, including our provincial hospital, and we have long noted this. Our current health infrastructure is not adequate to meet the challenges posed by the increased demand for free health services and the increase in national health needs. With the signing of the contract, we will be turning over a new leaf in the provision of health services.”

Minister Bosavai said the project would not have been possible without Japan’s commitment to the Solomon Islands health sector.

Meanwhile, Yumi Tokuda, director of the second department of grant project management at the Japan International Cooperation Agency, said the Japanese funds were provided in response to a request for assistance from the Solomon Islands government.

The Kiluufi Hospital renovation project will be the second health assistance provided by Japan after the Gizo Hospital.

The signing was witnessed by Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and Foreign Minister Peter Shanel Angovaka.
