A study shows that by 2023, 302 million children worldwide will become victims of online sexual abuse.
According to The Conversation magazine, researchers from the University of Edinburgh’s “Childlight” initiative published a report last year titled “Towards the Light,” which aims to reveal the prevalence of child abuse. 12.6% of children worldwide have been exposed to pornographic images and videos without their consent and have been identified as victims because they were shared.
That equates to 302 million children, with the United States being a particularly high risk area, the researchers noted in the report, which looked at a representative sample of 4,918 men aged 18 and older living in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The report states that one in nine men in the US (about 14 million people) admitted to having committed an online crime against a child at some point in their life, compared to 7% of British men (1.8 million) and 7% of American men. Five of them (about 700,000 people) reportedly made similar confessions.
Millions of men in these three countries admitted they would attempt to physically sexually assault a child if they thought they would keep it a secret.
The report noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed online habits around the world, with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which works in the field of internet safety, estimating that by 2023, child sexual abuse material, in which primary school pupils aged between seven and 10 are led to engage in sexual activities online, will be posted in the UK, with alerts reporting an increase of more than 1,000% following quarantine.
