Michel says Girona must forget last season’s dream run

Girona coach Michel said the team must forget about last season’s third-placed finish in La Liga and will start from scratch after losing 0-3 to Atletico Madrid on Sunday, which left the team third from bottom in this season’s league.

After achieving their best league result in history and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time, Girona struggled in the new season, drawing with Real Betis in their first game and then suffering a disastrous away defeat to Atletico Madrid.

“That’s one of my challenges as a coach, to get the best out of every player by keeping the opponent’s score to zero, so no one thinks our goal is to get third place again,” Michel said in a news conference.

“We will always be compared, but we know that we are a team that has to work humbly, we have to keep growing, we have pride, we want to be better than last year, we will work hard, but we will always keep our feet on the ground.”

Despite the scoreline, Spain still took some positives from their performance against “a great team”.

“I don’t pay too much attention to the result, but we have to speed up and be more aggressive with and without the ball,” he added. “In terms of defending and pressing, we were good.”

Girona will host Osasuna on Thursday looking for their first La Liga win of the season.
