Two parallel exhibitions at Mexico’s Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) museum are revealing new details about her life, coinciding with the seventieth anniversary of the artist’s death, Mond reports.
Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954, at the age of 47. Mexico seeks to reveal previously unknown aspects of Kahlo’s personality, who became a true global icon for her work and personality. Frida lived in Coyoacan, Mexico for 36 years, and the nearby “Blue House” has been converted into a museum. We have 18 of Frida’s works, but the most valuable are the archives – the artist’s letters, notebooks and her collections. The collection includes pre-Hispanic art and photographs, said Perla Labarte, director of the museum.
200 objects are on display in the 800 square meters of the Blue House, the home that Frida Kahlo shared with her husband, the artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957). Fifteen of them have never been seen before, having been discovered in the service rooms of the house only after the artist’s death. The objects in both exhibitions reveal details of Frida Kahlo’s childhood, her desire to become a doctor and playing with microscopes; something that stayed with her throughout her life; and her love for Mexican culture.
