Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, one of the world’s largest drug kingpins, and the son of his former partner Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman were arrested in El Paso, Texas, on charges filed by U.S. federal agents.
“The Department of Justice has detained two additional individuals accused of being leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world,” the Justice Department said in a statement. Reuters.
Zambada and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Lopez, son of El Chapo, face multiple charges in the United States “for leading the drug cartel’s criminal activities, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking network,” the statement said.
U.S. authorities praised Bada and Guzman Lopez for being detained after they landed on a private jet, Reuters reported.
Zambada is one of the most important drug traffickers in Mexican history and a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel along with El Chapo, who was extradited to the United States in 2017 and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison.
According to the same source, after “El Chapo” was extradited, his criminal empire was inherited by his four sons (known as “Los Chapitos”), who took control of their faction of the cartel, eventually becoming one of the largest exporters of fentanyl to the United States.
