MEMPHIS, Tenn. (MMA) — Memphis Merit Academy Charter School (MMA), led by founder and principal Lakennna Booker, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new campus at 4089 American Way. The new campus is located on the site of the former Kroger and surrounding shopping plaza in the heart of Parkway Village, which MMA purchased in the spring of 2023.

“This is more than just a new facility for a growing school,” said Booker, who grew up in Parkway Village. “It’s a source of hope for an often troubled community. While Juneteenth is a national day of historic celebration, we are also celebrating how our new school will help transform the lives of our students, families and the entire community.”

Representatives from local government and the many partner organizations that made the purchase and renovation of the new campus possible will attend the ceremony. In addition, MMA scholars will perform, and attendees will be provided with school tours, food trucks, entertainment and games.

Booker founded MMA in 2019 at 4775 American Way. Since its founding, MMA has been the only charter school in the Parkway Village area. MMA currently offers classes from kindergarten to sixth grade, with plans to add seventh and eighth grades in the next two years. MMA’s new campus provides students with a greatly expanded, modern learning environment, including a state-of-the-art playground facility.
