Sometimes you come across animals that look unusual and at first you’re not sure what species they are.
Skydog Sanctuary shared a video of the rescued horse-zebra mix, who they named Pet, on their Instagram profile.
Pet looks like a classic brown horse, but with slightly shorter, stockier legs, a zebra-like face and typical zebra stripes on parts of his body. Pet was rescued from an exotic animal auction and brought to the shelter along with three other mares.
This is a place where he will be cared for by people who care about his well-being.
In the description of the Instagram video, they wrote: “What an extraordinary sight and sound.”
They go on to describe how a woman rescued him from an auction and then worked to help him adjust to life with her family. She wanted to awaken the “horse” gene in him, but ultimately she concluded that the zebra gene won out – Pet enjoyed it most when he was running free.
Followers were shocked when they saw the video because they had no idea such hybrids actually existed, especially that someone deliberately hybridized them. Also, they had never heard of animals advertising themselves.
One comment read: “I’ve been trying to find what a zebra sounds like. Five doesn’t sound like a zebra, it totally sounds like a cross between a horse and a zebra. He’s very ugly looking but he’s a beautiful creature and so happy to have found him sanctuary at Sky Dog Sanctuary, it’s definitely the best place for him.”
