McLaren has two number one drivers

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has commented on the dynamic between the team’s two Formula One drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, describing them as equals.

After what happened in Hungary and the debate on Hungarian radio, the discussion arose about whether McLaren should have a leading driver who enjoys the support of his teammates. The British team responded by saying that Norris and Piastri were equals at this stage, a position reiterated by Brown.

“There’s no doubt about it – they both want to be the No. 1 driver, and they both are. We just don’t have a No. 2 driver, but they race for the team. They’re the kind of guys who compete too much with each other to be No. 1 in their minds, but respect the fact that we have two No. 1 cars. We always have and will continue to do so,” Brown said.

However, the American believes that later in the season, if one of his drivers has a real chance of winning the title, the policy could change and there would be a clear division between driver No. 1 and driver No. 2. Before the final ten rounds of the year, Norris is second with 78 points, behind Max Verstappen, while Piastri is fourth with 110 points, behind the three-time world champion.

“Of course, if late in the championship one of the drivers had a better chance than the other, we might start looking at different scenarios. But we treat them equally. They know that and like the fact that when one of the two has to give something up, they respect our decision. They approach with respect. So I think we’re lucky to have both of them,” Brown said.
