The Instagram account of American food chain McDonald’s was taken over by a group of hackers.
The hacker promoted a “meme token” called GRIMACE, which was issued on the social networking site Solana’s network.
After the launch, the token market cap increased from $100,000 to $20 million.
After an account with more than 5 million followers was hacked, users began selling and the token’s value fell below $1 million.
The hacker group can be seen writing “Thank you for your $700,000 investment in Solana” on McDonald’s Instagram profile.
The biography also used the word “nigger,” considered a derogatory term for people of African descent, and the Indian flag.
McDonald’s has not issued an official statement, but officials who spoke to The American Sun apologized for what happened.
“We are aware of isolated incidents affecting our social media accounts. We have resolved the account issues,” the official said. “We apologize to our followers for the offensive language that was shared during this time.”
