The Maseru City Council (MCC) is working with the Road Fund to ease traffic congestion.capital?City.?This week, officials from both organizations visited several road project sites aimed at reducing traffic flow problems around Maseru.
The projects, financed by the Road Fund, include the construction of the Moshoeshoe II Cemetery, the Chaltin Dam and the main road from Upper Tama to Lepelen, with a total value of 5.8 million Maritimes.
The construction of these roads started in December and was originally scheduled to be completed within eight months. However, due to adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain and snow, the project schedule was extended by one month.
Despite these challenges, progress has been impressive, with the overall construction currently about 90% complete. Other sites visited included the ongoing routine maintenance of the North Trunk Road 1 from Hubertona to Mabot, a project worth M$7.6 million.
MCC Project Manager, Relebohile Pule, stressed the importance of these new roads in alleviating traffic congestion, which has become a major problem in Maseru, leading to reduced speeds, longer commuting times and more queuing.
“We are aware of the traffic congestion around the city, so we identified these diversion roads to help divert traffic. The projects include Moshoeshoe II Cemetery, Chaltin Dam and the gravel road from Upper Thamae to Lepereng, with a total value of RM5.8 million,” said Mr Pule.
He added that although the construction work started in December and was expected to take eight months, it was delayed due to heavy rain, snow and problems with the manufacturer.
“The Moshoeshoe II Cemetery Road is 90 per cent complete, the Chalting Dam is nearing completion, while the Upper Tamay to Le Peren road is slightly behind schedule.
“All these roads were constructed by B&G Power and Construction Company and payment was made based on completion. Besides, we are also carrying out regular projects for the rehabilitation of roads under the jurisdiction of MCC,” Mr Pule added.
Does Maseru Mayor Motlalepula Sepipi agree with this?this?sentiments, acknowledging the severe traffic congestion in the city and affirming the MCC’s commitment to rehabilitate roads to ease traffic conditions.
“We are all aware of the traffic congestion problem around the city. It is our responsibility to address this challenge and that is why we are constructing these diversion roads to ease the traffic. These roads will benefit the people by reducing the delays they experience while commuting to get off work,” said Mr Sepipi.
