Traffic issues in San Pedro continue to be one of the top concerns for Ambergris Caye residents, as all the posts on social media make clear. The most pressing issue is traffic congestion and the burden of all the large construction vehicles that pass through downtown San Pedro.
Just recently, one resident shared a video of 13 heavy dump trucks lined up in a row through the city center, and another shared photos of two accidents, one of which involved two trucks colliding and another of two golf carts being pinned by a large dump truck.
Increased construction on Ambergris Caye is placing a strain on the island with large vehicles plying the city center and north-south highways. Congestion, traffic delays, dusty roads and frequent accidents are taking a toll on La Isla Bonita, and residents are concerned about safety issues and the potential negative impact on the island’s tourism industry.
This week, San Pedro Mayor Wally Nunez shared the actions the San Pedro Town Council is taking and will take to address transportation on the island. He thanked Ambergris Caye residents for their thoughts and concerns regarding the influx of heavy construction vehicles into town. “Local government is committed to making our roads safer, and community input is critical,” Mayor Wally said.

Take action now: Capacity building is being undertaken by transport departments and administrators to better manage the flow of large trucks during peak hours. In addition, companies have been asked to install GPS tracking devices on all trucks. This move is aimed at tracking the movement of trucks and ensuring adherence to the peak hour schedule in the city centre.
long term plan: Plans are being developed to move the transportation of construction materials out of the town center entirely. The strategy includes creating a barge access for the northern San Pedro area on the west side of the island. This will facilitate the transportation of materials from the southern docks to future sites in the north, limiting the use of large trucks within the town center to smaller delivery vehicles.
Enhanced Traffic Management: Residents are reminded that the San Pedrito Expressway is nearing completion, providing a new route to relieve congestion on current major roads. In addition, a system-wide plan is being implemented in partnership with the national government to address various traffic issues, including speeding, disorderly driving and the roadworthiness of motor vehicles.
Mayor Nunez thanked the community for their patience and engagement in addressing the challenges facing this growing island, and encouraged residents to continue sharing their ideas and solutions in an effort to improve transportation on Ambergris Caye.
