The Constitutional Council confirmed the results announced by the electoral commission on Monday, which showed Ghazouani won the first round of elections with 56.12% of the vote, ahead of historical rival Biram Dah Abeid (22.10%) and Islamist candidate Hamadi Ould Sidi El Mokhtar (12.78%).
The Constitutional Council did not process any appeals within the time allowed after the election results were announced on Saturday, its secretary general, Aminatou Mint El Hales, said at a ceremony in Nouakchott.
“In light of the results thus announced, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani is elected President of the Republic of Mauritania,” she said.
“He will take office on August 2, 2024,” she said.
Mr. Ghazouani, a 67-year-old career soldier who was elected in the first round of 2019 elections, will for five years lead this vast desert nation at the junction of North and sub-Saharan Africa, a stable space in the Sahel region troubled by jihadism and coups, and a future gas producer.
The country of 4.9 million inhabitants has not suffered an attack by jihadists on its territory since 2011, while jihadists are present in large numbers in neighboring Mali and other parts of the Sahel.
Since independence, Mauritania has experienced a series of coups and authoritarian regimes. The 2019 elections marked the first handover between two elected presidents.
The presidential elections were held without major incidents, but clashes broke out after the first results were announced. Three people died in Kadi (South) on Monday Tuesday evening. Mobile data networks have been cut off.
He partially recovered on Wednesday evening, AFP noted. No major new illnesses have been reported.
Three of Ghazovani’s six rivals called him to congratulate him, according to a news release from his staff. Biram Dah Abeid continues to dispute the results.
