The Ministry of Health stressed that appropriate maternity leave is of great help to the mother’s mental health. Maternity leave is essential to maintain the mother’s physical and mental health before and after childbirth.

Research shows that maternity leave is a preventive measure against postpartum psychological problems, including depression and general mental health problems. It can also reduce the need for mental health care services.

Huda bint Humaid al Jardaniyah, director of the maternity benefit allowance program at the Social Protection Fund, said that maternity insurance covers the entire process of mothers from pregnancy to postpartum. This type of insurance is essential to provide social protection for families and strengthen partnerships and fairness principles.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that neglecting women’s mental health during the perinatal period threatens their overall health and affects the physical and emotional development of their children.

Prenatal and maternity leave helps mothers adapt to the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, improves comfort and happiness. Maternity leave provides mothers with sufficient time to prepare for childbirth, create a good family environment for the newborn, and reduce the risk of psychological illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

Postpartum maternity leave is beneficial to the physical and mental recovery of the mother, allowing her to concentrate on taking care of the child without having to bear the pressure of returning to work, thereby enhancing the emotional connection between mother and child.

Dr Jean Jabour, WHO Representative in Oman, stressed the importance of mothers being with their children in the first few months of their lives, as this period is crucial for the emotional and social development of their children.

Providing maternity leave to working mothers is a wise investment in their health and that of their children. Maternity leave allows mothers to rest and care for their newborn, which improves breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates. Breastfeeding is essential in the first six months, and maternity leave supports this choice by ensuring mothers have the necessary time and comfort.

Furthermore, maternity leave provides mothers with the opportunity to organize their personal and professional lives after childbirth and enhances their ability to balance work and family responsibilities.
