MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) – The Memphis Area Transportation Authority (MATA) plans to cut more than 200 jobs as leaders face a multi-million dollar budget shortfall.

“To ensure a reliable transportation system, we must optimize current service levels,” a MATA spokesperson wrote in a statement to news channel FOX13.

MATA has laid off 17 employees associated with streetcar operations, the statement said.

The statement said leaders plan to reduce the number of fixed routes from 23 to 16. They also plan to have 250 to 300 employees instead of the current 512. The statement said leaders plan to propose a $67 million budget that will require “some difficult but necessary decisions.”
