Masisi faces two lawsuits after leaving office

Reinventing the slogan used by the BDP in this election will not be easy for (President Mokgweetsi) Masisi after he leaves office. That’s because two political parties – a top agricultural company and Masisi’s first permanent secretary to the presidency – have informed him that they plan to file a lawsuit against him if he loses the presidential immunity he currently enjoys.

Last month, Champrimo Botswana Group of Companies warned Masisi about alleged intellectual property theft. The company said that when Masisi learned of the company’s plans to relocate to the UAE, he dissuaded the directors from moving there as he believed the country was better suited to serving international clients. He reportedly told them that they should serve Botswana’s clients and help Botswana become a centre of excellence in the livestock value chain; transfer their capabilities, knowledge and intellectual property to the country for farmers to own and benefit. The latter, the president explained, would stimulate national economic transformation and economic impact in support of his new national development agenda. He also implored the company to suspend business dealings with some Southern African Development Community member governments.
