Narc-Kenya announced its decision to withdraw from the United Kenya coalition.
The Martha Kalua-led party conveyed the decision in a letter to Azimio secretary-general Junet Mohammed.
Bashir said that under the coalition agreement, the withdrawal notice was effective immediately.
“Please be advised that due to current political developments, we are unable to continue in the ‘United as One’ Kenya coalition. As NARC Kenya, we are giving notice through this letter of withdrawal from the coalition as provided for in the withdrawal clause in the coalition agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter.” Martha Karua said in a letter dated July 25, 2024, through Acting Secretary General Asha Bashir.
Junet Mohammed confirmed that he received the letter.
“I received the letter. The alliance agreement provides for a three-month notice period,” He said.
Narc-Kenya’s exit comes amid rising tensions among Azimio party leaders, especially after President William Ruto nominated ODM party members as cabinet ministers.
As attention turns to a political reshuffle in 2027, Kalua’s departure adds another twist to the changing political landscape.
The former justice minister is Raila Odinga’s running mate against President William Ruto in the 2022 presidential election. If Odinga’s bid for African Union Commission chairperson is successful, she will also lead the Azimio coalition.
