August 19, 2024 – The Manu Samoa head coach and management team were handed the redundancy letter when they travelled to France for the recent Olympics following a dismal performance at the last World Rugby Sevens and losing their place as a core team in the tour.

After the dismissal notices were revealed, Manu Samoa Sevens head coach Mulia Gatler Brian Lima revealed that the team members received the dismissal letters on the day they left for the Olympics last month.

He told the media that he was disappointed with the decision to terminate his contract early, but he admitted that he gave everything for the team.

The contracts of the head coach and management were originally scheduled to expire in November this year.

Under the leadership of Muriaga Taylor, the Manu Samoa Sevens team’s performance declined from the beginning of last season’s World Rugby Sevens Series, eventually finishing second from the bottom.

This resulted in the team having to participate in the promotion and relegation tournament of the Rugby Sevens Series in Madrid, Spain. Samoa lost all the matches in Madrid and lost its position as a core team in the Rugby Sevens Series.

In an interview on social media at the time, Muliagartner claimed that four players deliberately sabotaged the team’s game because they were destined to lose. He did not reveal the names of these players.

To return to the heart of the Sevens series, Samoa must be the top non-core team at the Oceania Sevens Championships in November.

This will allow them to participate in the Challenger Series, where they will need to finish in the top four to have a chance to compete for qualification to the final tournament of the World Rugby Sevens Series next season.
