A spherical egg, a “one in a billion” phenomenon, has been found in a Scottish supermarket and has been bought.
The egg went under the hammer at Thomson Rodick Callan Auctioneers and was bought by Ed Bonnar of Lambourn, Berkshire, for £150.
A Scottish woman found the egg inside a box of 15 eggs she bought in Asda, Ayr, during her weekly shop.
David Miller, of the auction house, described the find as a “one in a billion” event and said similar items had previously sold for hundreds of dollars.
Mr Pownall learned the egg was for sale through an STV news article and decided to bid for it in his local pub.
Ed BonnarAfter securing the purchase, the egg arrives via courier, wrapped in bubble wrap, polystyrene and foam to protect it.
“When I sent the courier the details of the lot, they called and asked me if I was kidding.
“They said they’d never seen anything like this before,” he added.
Mr Pownall said he hoped to preserve the egg using a technique called “egg blowing”.
“I believe there is a technique called egg blowing, where you make a small hole in the bottom of the yolk and then take the yolk out,” he said.
Mr Pownall’s friends and family had mixed reactions, adding that his young daughter “still doesn’t understand it”.
“It’s a lot of fun and I’ve also taken it to local pubs at the request of my landlord.”
