One gentleman who has lived in Paramaribo for most of his life said the lifestyle in Comervejne is completely different.

“As soon as you cross the bridge, you immediately notice the pressure is lifted off your shoulders,” he said.

The man responded to a person’s story Dutch tourists said Didn’t dare go further due to “safety issues” in downtown Paramaribo.

“When I heard this, I realised that I had been feeling the same way for years. In recent years, the city has become busier and crime has increased. That’s why I decided to take this step and move to Commewijne.”

He told GFC News Lifestyle that he feels much safer after the move, especially because he has a family.

“It’s a little far to get to work, but I feel safer here and sleep more soundly. That’s the most important thing for me and my family.”

The man said Paramaribo, a city of more than 240,000 residents, had seen a decline in the sense of safety in recent years, while Commewijne had a much lower population density, with only about 31,000 residents.

He inherited a family plot of land in Commewijne and has slowly built a house in recent years.

“It took some time to build this house, but it was worth the effort,” he said.

“In Paramaribo, I increasingly felt that I had to stay alert. Here I can finally relax again and enjoy the quietness of my surroundings.”
