APIA, SAMOA – 5 August 2024 – PJ Pi’i Lepale, one of the nine suspects accused of burning down the Faleula family businesses and homes a few months ago, is suspected to have fled abroad.
In court, the prosecutor briefed Judge Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma on the situation and requested an arrest warrant for PJ.
However, when asked whether the accused had been summoned, the prosecution replied “no”.
A Rome judge has given prosecutors time to finalize charges before issuing an arrest warrant.
The defendants are Henry Fretton, Tuaolo Palagi, Mauiseaso Teofili, Blessed Fretton, William Fretton, Vaiao Levasa Teofili Fetaiai Pi’i, Vaialia Paneta and PJ Pi’i Lepale.
The accused were charged in connection with the burning of family businesses and houses the day after a dispute between Sagaga 1 MP Loau Keneti Sio and his wife.
All the defendants have pleaded not guilty to the 10 charges against them.
Family members whose properties were burned also face charges filed by Luo and his family, and the defendants have pleaded not guilty to those charges.
The case against the nine arson suspects will be heard in the Supreme Court.
