A man who broke into the office of the Vice President of Malawi and stole computers has been arrested along with 42 others in a joint operation by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the Malawi Police Service (MPS).

“We have arrested 43 criminals, including one who broke into the vice president’s office and stole computers,” armed forces chief General Paul Valentin Phiri told a news conference.

The arrests followed a joint operation in Kenya’s capital, Lilongwe, to nab a group of suspects camped behind the Golden Peacock Hotel.

Gen Phiri said the suspects were involved in a range of crimes, including the theft of water meters, communication cables and power transformer parts.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Happy Mkandawire commended the joint operation, saying: “We are grateful to the officers who took part in this operation.

Whenever we were at a loss, we asked the MDF to help us. Now we will take over because it is our job to investigate and prosecute.”
