On April 27, 2024, a grieving mother in Uturay sought help from the Fagatogo Police Station because two men were threatening her family.
According to police records, the mother explained how the defendant, Mark Nelisi, cursed and threatened his wife with a knife in front of their home in Utulei.
When the police arrived at the mother’s house, they saw two men and one woman in front of the door and called the police station.
The police approached one of the two men, who told the police about his abuse and went to the victim’s house to ask him why he told the mayor that they had finished drinking. He also accused the victim of lying to the mayor that they were doing drug dealing at the house in the community. The man also said that the victim’s son suggested that they grow a sturdy tree.
The man who was previously questioned by police, Mr Mark Nelisi, has now been charged in the case.
Another man they met in front of the home involved was Mr Fafeti Kaleopa. Kaleopa explained to the police that this was not the first time the victim had done this, calling the mayor and lying to them so they dealt in drugs.
As police were questioning Nellis and Calleopa, they saw another man approach them who told them he was involved in the act.
The boy explained that when his family was asleep and the lights were off, an unknown person called him and asked him why he contacted the mayor and lied to him, so they dealt with the drugs.
The caller also threatened the man, asking him to come to the basketball court near EOB to fight, but the victim responded, “No.”
The caller then said they were going to their house, and the victim answered the call and asked them to wait.
The father explained to the victim that he heard someone yelling and cursing in the street outside their home. He walked outside with his son and they saw two men standing in front of their house. One of them, named Nellis, was holding a spear.
He also went out with the victim’s daughter and tried to kill the accused.
When the police questioned Nelish, he pointed to a rhesus macaque near a coconut tree in front of the house.
The police then locked up the suspect and put him in a police car.
After placing the defendant in the car, the police questioned the victim’s son, who said he was not welcome to shoot according to the powerful stick he was hit with. But the son replied that what he was holding was a black toy gun.
When the police and the defendant arrived at the police station, the police smelled the defendant’s odor and the defendant’s eyes turned red.
Nelisi was charged with two counts:
Count 1: Public Disorder – a Class “B” Misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in prison, a $500 fine, or both.
Count 2: Assault in the Third Degree – a Class “C” misdemeanor, punishable by up to 15 days in jail, or a $300 fine, or both.
The defendant has posted $1,000 bail to remain free while awaiting trial.
