June 28, 2024 (El Fasher) – An official from the Ministry of Health in Sudan’s western North Darfur state announced on Friday that the number of deaths due to malnutrition among children in El Fasher has increased.
The state’s health ministry revealed that the number of deaths and injuries has increased in the ongoing fighting between the army and its allies and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher.
The RSF has been accused of deliberately targeting civilian settlements and medical facilities in the historical capital of the Darfur region. Fighting has been ongoing in El Fasher since May 10, with Sudanese troops using airlifts to resupply the besieged city.
The director general of the Ministry of Health, Ibrahim Abdullah Carter, told the Sudan Tribune that the death toll has reached 675 and the number of injured has reached 4,300 since the fighting began.
Qatar reported an increase in deaths of children due to malnutrition in El Fasher, which he said was being recorded, especially after the bombing of therapeutic feeding centers, which worsened the situation.
Confirming the dire situation of the citizens of El Fasher, he noted that most people have been displaced and are living in the open air without water, food or protection due to heavy shelling by the Rapid Support Forces on communities, markets, hospitals, shelters and camps for displaced persons. He described the situation as dangerous, especially with the rainy season approaching.
State officials noted that the health ministry has taken several steps, including finding alternatives for hospitals and centers that have ceased services and opening therapeutic feeding centers in areas where citizens gather with support from UNICEF.
He added that the ministry is coordinating with local and international partners to launch the preventive treatment centres.
Recently, the Rapid Support Forces have stepped up their attacks on medical facilities, causing the health sector in El Fasher to face almost complete collapse.
