The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested eight immigration officials and two civilians for alleged corruption in the issuance of passports at the Lilongwe office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
ACB Acting Officer Hilary Chilomba has confirmed the arrests but did not reveal the names of those arrested.
Chilumba said the Immigration Department investigated the alleged corruption and confirmed that people did pay K200,000 on top of the K50,000 passport fee to get their passports.
Chilumba further revealed that some of the suspects had huge amounts of money on them. One of the suspects had K2.5 million on him but his whereabouts were unknown.
According to Chilumba, one of those arrested was an inspector from the Lilongwe office.
He said the investigation was still ongoing and said the ACB would also conduct investigations in other immigration offices.
