The Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) said that judging from the current preparations, the Malawi national chess team will definitely achieve good results in the upcoming World Chess Olympiad.


The Malawi chess team will participate in the 45th World Olympiad to be held in Budapest, Hungary from September 10 to 23 this year.
The association’s publicity secretary, Francisco Mwangupili, said all preparations were in place for the country to participate in the event.
“We are committed to ensuring the national team is fully prepared through intensive training and player welfare programmes,” he said.


He said the association had organised several training sessions to enhance the team’s preparedness and the national team players would start competing against the country’s top players in Lilongwe from this weekend.
“In addition, players receive virtual training from grandmasters appointed by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), a privilege also enjoyed by many other countries,” he said.
Mwangupiri said that currently, there are 198 teams registered in the open category and 184 teams registered in the women’s category.
Mwangupili said the association also planned to hold a corporate chess tournament at the Ammalyris Hotel in Blantyre on August 31 this year for the sake of training and welfare of the players.
“For this tournament, we invite companies to sign up for the competition, with each team consisting of five players and two substitutes, and the entry fee is 250,000 kyats,” he said.
According to Mwangupili, the Malawi National Chess Team (Open) will consist of Josephy Mwale, Chiletso Chipanga, Petros Mfune, Precious Kamwendo and George Mwale.
The publicity secretary added that the women’s team includes Susan Namangale, Tupokiwe Msukwa, Linda Jambo, Anne Simwaba and Rachel Jayloss, the youngest female player ever to qualify for the national team through the national championships.
He further said the delegation also included CHESSAM President Mpilo Mizere, Jonathan Ibrahim, Leornard Mbwana (Open Team Captain) and Gift HowaHowa (Women’s Team Captain).
The Chess Olympiad is held every two years and was last held in Chennai, India in 2022.
